So sometimes, it takes a single day where three different people from different areas of one’s life, all saying that I’m not my normal, happy self for it to really sink in that things are not all well. Well, maybe not – I knew that my energy has a bit lower as of late. There’s still a lot of processing going on with the family, and there was another transition period as one set of students finished their rotation and then I started with a new bunch. Yet, there’s this ever long list of things to do and accomplish. Sure, some more important than others, some that needed more attention than others…
But really, what helps during those moments of overwhelm and stress is taking a moment to stop, pause, and reflect. If you get quiet enough, you’ll typically get what really needs to be done first, and that may be to disengage entirely and do something completely different. Sometimes, you’ll get a reminder of what or why you’re doing something in the first place. Maybe that’s the idea of a completed project, or a trip with loved ones, or even just simply another night’s rest at the end of the day. Or perhaps you just need to let whatever needs to wash through you do exactly that and you give in to the moment of the stress and overwhelm and cry, wallow, vent, curse, whatever. In that moment though, you are allowing yourself to feel how exactly human you are and once that’s done, you find how much clearer headed you area afterward.
Honor your mind, your body, your spirit’s various ways of getting you to stop and slow down. For me, that’s been keeping it quiet, staying in, drinking my tea, reflecting, and clearing my space and my energy of whatever density is bringing me down. I’ll admit, it’s a longer process than normal, but it is my process and I will honor that, just as you will do what you need to do to go through your moments.
And for me, what do I have to look forward to? Well, a weekend singing my heart out (and hopefully not having my voice give out) amongst some very talented folks and taking the time for me – that’s what I’m looking forward in the immediate future. What about you? Feel free to let me know and I’ll see you on the other side!
